Elevation of Even Evil

Kamaih krodhaih pralobhais ca vyapto yo’tra naradhamah
Sopi yati harer lokam salagrama silarcanat

The Padama Purana says that even people who are the lowest rungs of humanity, who are ruled by
  1. anger,
  2. lust and
  3. greed
– even such people if they worship the Shaligram shila can be elevated to the abode of Lord Vishnu.

Safety Kit / Pilgrimage

"Salagrama silarupi yatra tisthati kesavah
Navadhante’suras tatra bhuta vetalak ayah
Salagram sila yatra tat tirtham tat tapovanam
Yatah sanniihit as tatra bhagavan madhusudanah"

if Lord Keshava is placed in the form of a Shaligram shila at any place, then neither
  1. demons,
  2. ghosts, nor
  3. evil spirits
can create any obstacles nor harm that person or place.

Wherever the Shaligram shila is installed for worship, that place turns into a pilgrimage spot for the performance of austerities. Because then the supreme personality of Godhead, Madhusudana (Killer of the Madhu demon) resides there personally.

Worship Optional / Errorless / No Need

  1. Puranic Texts unanimously state that it is sufficient to merely look at the Shaligram to gain benefits. Rigorous worship is always meritorious, but it is neither indispensable nor obligatory. In fact, Anupa Simha’s “Salagrama Pariksa” says that worship is optional.
  2. “Sandilya Samhita” declares that there be no possible error when Shaligram worship is undertaken - any lapse or defect is immediately and automatically condoned and purpose of worship would be fulfilled.
  3.  “Salagrama Sila Lakshana Paddhati” says : for worshipping there is no need of
    1. Guru (the Preceptor or the Master who initiates),
    2. Mantra (the Hymnal Formula to chant, given formally by the Guru),
    3. Japa (Ceremonial repetition of the Mantra),
    4. Bhavana (Visualisation of a Deity),
    5. Stuti (Eulogy) or an
    6. Upachara (Service).

Meaning

सलाग्रमं शिलायाँतु साक्षात् श्री à¤•ृष्ण à¤¸ेवानाम
नित्यम संनिहितास तत्र वसुदेवो जगाद गुरू
Salagrama consists of two words ‘saalayah’ and ‘graamam.’ ‘Saalyah’ means lord and ‘gramam’ means a congregation. Thus Salagram represents a group of gods in one place.

12000 saligramam and 33 crore celestials

Lord Vishnu, presiding deity at Kerala's Padmanabhaswami temple is made of 12,000 'salagramams' or sacred stones. The stones, brought from Gandaki river in Nepal, are bound together by a mixture of herbs and resins, a sticking subtance.

A book on the Travancore royal family which maintains the temple reveals that the 18-foot Vishnu idol bears the images of a whopping 33 crore celestials in conceptualised form, besides those of goddess Lakshmi and Bhoomi Devi as well as sages.
